Personal responsibility is the main key component for a student to success in college. Everyone has difference personal responsibility of becoming a successful student in education. As a college student, it is his responsibility to acquire self-knowledge, improve personal quality, and maintain good attitude. It is also important to have the commitment and motivation to finish college. Another key to responsibility is time management because a person has to make a schedule that includes schoolwork and his personal life. Personal responsibility is self-knowledge, personal quality, and attitude because the relationship between personal responsibility and college success will be the commitment and motivation that also lead to preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility on time management in education.
The definition of personal responsibility divided into many important versions. Everyone has his own version of what personal responsibility means to him. Even if there are different versions of the definition, there are still key components that must cover, which includes self-knowledge, personal quality, and attitude. Vogt and Colvin (2005) noted, ???Self-knowledge is defined as knowledge of one??™s personality traits as they are exhibited in behavior??? (p. 240). Self-knowledge also means acquiring the ability and taking the initiative to act when a situation arrives. When a person knows he has to take the chance to succeed, he has to participate and act upon the situation, make the best use out of it, and profit it to be at a higher level. The third part of self-knowledge is the time a student seizes the opportunity; he has to take control to succeed. Personal responsibility includes self-knowledge for a good reason, a person must know what he wants to achieve and also knows what it can bring. Personal quality is also an important
component in personal responsibility. That one quality is the main focus to develop their skills and study habits. Attitude plays a crucial role. Attitude can give off impressions, become a way of thinking, and even become a deciding factor during difficult decisions between college success and family. People need to maintain and realize their own attitude to make sure it does not affect how they think and act. They need to take responsibility of their attitude and adjust for certain situations. Some attitudes work, some will never emerge as successful. In other words, self-responsibility incorporates self-knowledge, personal quality, and attitude.
There is a connection between personal responsibility and be successful in college. A student needs to be responsible for the commitment of college success. Commitment to college enables a student to persist in school despite the problems and difficulties he may encounter (Hackman & Dysinger, 1970). It is a person??™s own responsibility that he committed to complete all of assignments in according with the instructions and date line. Assignments created as a practice for tests and other life obstacles. The relationship between personal responsibility and college success help a person stay committed to his assignments. It also keeps people committed to attend classes to learn the material necessary for the assignments or else they will be lost and left behind. A person also needs to stay motivated to learning and completing subjects or else there is no point in going to college. Also it is a person??™s own responsibility to stay motivated and find what keeps him motivated to complete college. Motivation is a necessary key that keep a person going forward. It makes him study, do assignments, go to class, and learn about lessons. Without motivation on personal responsibility, people will not be able to complete assignments or even going back to college. Motivation and commitment are the two most important key components for college success.
Personal responsibility is also essential in preliminary plan to practice personal education. As a student, you have to be responsible for managing your time between college and family or else it can be a chaotic schedule. Snyder (1976) said, ???You need some sort of balance sheet on your particular assets and liabilities strengths and weaknesses, if you are to manage both your life and career effectively??? (p. 65). You have to take the responsibility of planning out your education and family events. One main important thing is you need to plan out your working schedules and school assignments. You have to make sure that the time you chose is manageable and does not put too much stress on you. You also need to plan out if you can finish on time for certain classes and certain deadlines. You have to be responsible for dividing your time to make the most of it. Assignments are not the only thing that you have to spend time on. There are many activities that go on throughout the day that a person must do. You have to plan out your time for chores, hobbies, and events. Hughlett (1976) stated, ???Self-awareness in planning provides us with and understanding of our strengths and weaknesses for achieving what we need or want to do??? (p. 11). Planning and time management are necessary to make sure that activities and school assignments do not take over your life and still be able to complete them all. Personal responsibility will help you with preliminary planning so you can manage your time for school and other activities.
In conclusion, personal responsibility of college success connects to make you successful in life. Personal responsibility does not have a definition that everyone goes by; because everyone has his own definition of what personal responsibility is. Commitment and motivation will lead to the relationship between personal responsibility and college success. To be successful, you need a preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility in education. The
main purpose of personal responsibility is different in everyone and practiced differently, but to be successful in college, a student must have self knowledge, commitment, motivation, and time management.
